Life Lessons/Things I Learnt After Completing High School (part 4)

#4: Gratitude is the key to happiness.

Most of us aren’t happy with our lives. We always want some new gadget, better relationships or simply to feel good all the time. But, the sad truth is most of us aren’t happy as we do not always get what we want. Here’s how we can change that: GRATITUDE!

What is GRATITUDE???depositphotos_54772217-Gratitude--wooden-sign

Gratitude is a noun meaning “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness”. Simply put gratitude is about being appreciative and thankful.

What should we appreciate and be thankful for? 11e30c33cfb0a22b0ea5af8c509a2cbd

Most of us are thankful when things are going our way— when we do well in the public exams, when we finally make our first million and when we finally buy that new phone. There is nothing wrong with that but today I would like to suggest to you that gratitude should be practiced in the small things in our daily lives.

How often have we overlooked the gifts we receive daily? We take life for granted and that is why we have so many regrets when death comes along. How grateful are we that our parents are still alive? They may not give us everything we want, but they sure try to give us everything we need and more.

Essentially, gratitude can and should be practiced daily. When we start seeing the beauty in the small things in life and be thankful for them then only can we truly how to live a contented life.

Gratitude also helps us to always see the good in every situation and this is so important in our world where negativity spreads like wildfire across countries and materialism befalls all teenagers. If teenagers were more grateful, there would not be a need for the next iPhone. When disaster strikes and we go through tough times in our life, that is when the practice of gratitude really shines through, helping us to see the silver lining in every cloud no matter how dark and gloomy they look.

Besides, here are some benefits of gratitude most of us may not be aware of:

Physical
• Stronger immune systems
• Less bothered by aches and pains
• Lower blood pressure
• Exercise more and take better care of their health
• Sleep longer and feel more refreshed upon waking

Psychological
• Higher levels of positive emotions
• More alert, alive, and awake
• More joy and pleasure
• More optimism and happiness

Social
• More helpful, generous, and compassionate
• More forgiving
• More outgoing
• Feel less lonely and isolated.

Practicing gratitude has so many benefits I do not see why everyone should not practice it. Having a good habit of being grateful for small things daily helps us to incorporate it into our lifestyle and ultimately make us better individuals and future leaders: not greedy, always thankful and cheerful beings 🙂

So, make it a point by starting your practice of gratitude today by being thankful for one thing in your life. It can be as simple as being thankful that you read this article. Then move on to being grateful for 3 things and then more. You will be amazed by how many things we can be grateful for when we take time to think about it.

One way you can practice gratitude more actively in your life is by using the words ‘THANK YOU’ more often. You will be surprised by what a big difference it can make in your life.

PRO TIP: Practice a habit of listing things you are grateful for in the morning. It helps to ensure you feel better and have a great day ahead!
